Monica’s Fall 2018 Schedule for Drumming & Drums Alive

It’s that time of year again — please find below my schedule (subject to change, so always stay tuned!) for Courtenay, Royston and Errington fall classes in African Hand drumming (all levels) and Drums Alive!


COURTENAY RECREATION CLASSES:  To register, phone 250 338 5371 or 250 338 1000

Intermediate African Hand Drumming:

Mondays, Sept 10 – Oct 22 (no class Oct 8 or Nov 12) and Oct 29 – Dec 17

11:45 am – 12:45 pm Upper Native Sons Hall

Beyond Beginners African Hand Drumming:

Wednesdays (**Note change in day, venue & time**), Sept 5 – Oct 24 and Oct 31 – Dec 19

5:30 – 6:30 pm  Upper Native Sons Hall

Beginners African Hand Drumming:

Thursdays (**Note day, venue & time change**), Sept 6 – Oct 25 (no class Sept 20) and Nov 1 – Dec 20

5:00 – 6:00 pm Lower Native Sons Hall


****Tentative: New class!!! Stay tuned for details!****   Intergenerational Jam: Shared Drumming Experience: this weekly meet-up, facilitated by local African Hand drumming instructor Monica Hofer,  offers participants the unique experience of sharing the joy of rhythm between generations. Young and older are welcome to bring a friend, a family member, a neighbour or even just someone you’d like to get to know better to this circle where we will experiment with communicating across the generations using djembes and hand held rhythm instruments.


Drums Alive:  all classes at the Upper Native Sons Hall (please go to “Drums Alive Comox Valley” on Facebook to see what this exciting and fun fitness class is all about – combining cardio/aerobic fitness with dance and drumming, it’s a combination that can’t be beat! ? )

PowerBeats:   Wednesdays, Sept 5 – Dec 19   7:00 – 8:00 pm

GoldenBeats:  Thursdays, Sept 6 – Dec 20 (no class Sept 27)  10:30 – 11:30 am


ERRINGTON CLASSES:  held at the Errington War Memorial Hall

Mondays, September 17th – December 3rd (No class October 8th or November 12th)

Beginners:  4:00 – 5:00 pm

Beginner Duns (African Bass Drums):  5:00 – 5:30 pm (tentative, dependent on registration)

Beyond Beginners:  5:30 – 6:30 pm


ROYSTON CLASSES:  All classes at the Royston Community Hall, at the lights on the Old Island Hwy in Royston

Registration is at the door, or via email correspondence  ().

Sundays, Sept 9 – Oct 21 (no class Oct 7) = 6 weeks & Oct 28 – Dec 16 (no class Nov 4 or Nov 11) = 6 weeks

And for those who like to plan far in advance: Mar 3 – Apr 14 2019 = 7 weeks & Apr 28 – June 16 (no class May 19) = 7 weeks

*NB: at this point I am tentatively not scheduling classes for January or February 2019; this may change, so stay tuned! ?

Beginner Duns    4:00 – 4:45 pm

Advanced Duns   5:45 – 6:30 pm

Performance Ensemble    6:30 – 7:30 pm

NB: I am pleased to announce that Corinne Durin will be taking over instruction of the balafon class for the upcoming session! Please contact Corinne directly with any questions ().

Bucket Brigade:   

Sept 5 & Sept 12  only @ 1:00 – 2:00 pm  INTRODUCTION TO BUCKETS (for “newbies”!! ? – these 2 classes are intended as an introduction to playing buckets for those interested in joining the bucket brigade – if you are new to this fun, rhythmic experience, you must take these 2 classes before beginning the regular session with the “seasoned” bucketeers!)

Sept 19 – Oct 31 = 7 weeks  & Nov 7 – Dec 19 = 7 weeks 1:00 – 2:00 pm

Balafon:      Sept 19 – Oct 31 = 7 weeks  & Nov 7 – Dec 19 = 7 weeks   2:00 – 3:00 pm


Winter Solstice Potluck/Drum/Fundraiser:   Dec 21st 2018 (NB it’s a Friday!)


Nov 3 – 4, 2018 Weekend: Koca and Sasha are back in town for African Drumming & Dance!!!!!! 


Summer Solstice Potluck/Drum/Fundraiser:   June 23rd 2019 (it’s a Sunday!)


Drum Camp with Jordan of DrumVictoria:   tentatively scheduled for July 5 – 7 th, 2019

Also, I am available again to facilitate two 6 week school programs in African Hand Drumming OR Drums Alive this fall/winter, so if anyone has children/grandchildren in school (any age level), please let them know that their school simply has to contact me to book a program! FYI: these programs would have to be Tuesdays. Thanks!


Celebrating 11 years of teaching African Hand Drumming on the mid-island, and still loving every minute of it! Thank you for your continued enthusiasm and support! Hope to see you at one class or another in September….
 

Friendly reminder: Courtenay Recreation participants in drumming and Drums Alive — register ASAP to avoid the disappointment of classes being cancelled! The word came down today, and you all know about the “little red button” LOL
